Advancements in DNA sequencing technologies have economized reading of individual genomes, creating potential to improve diagnostics and treatment for patients affected by genetic diseases. Yet, significant challenges remain in translating genomic data generated by these technologies into medically actionable information. These are both technical — for example, in creating infrastructure for the storage and management of enormous datasets — and conceptual — for example, identifying the one or few genetic mutations among the millions identified that causes a patient’s disease.
