Each year, millions of disposable to-go containers end up in landfills. This has a major impact on environment and is associated with large cost to tax payers. Major contributors to this waste are takeout coffee and food vendors. Reusable container programs have a potential to avoid these issues and several large vendors have made a pledge to increase the use of reusable containers and have even implemented reward programs. However, the proportion of regular takeout customers using such containers remains small. We are proposing an innovative user-centric system for substantially increasing reusable containers. Our app makes it fun, easy, and rewarding to reuse. It’s fun because it lets people set targets and compete with their friends and community on reuse-related environmental metrics (ex. trees saved). It’s easy because app reminds people to bring the cup, wash it etc. It’s rewarding, because of reward programs we’re setting up through partnerships with coffee shops.
